Framing the Future: Behind the Scenes of the Timber Frame Garage Build

This timber-frame garage with a loft is a testament to both functionality and fine craftsmanship. Designed to offer flexible storage and a warm, finished loft space above, it captures everything we value about traditional methods, thoughtful design, and buildings that will last for generations.

Why a Timber Frame Garage and Loft?

A garage is more than just storage—it can be a place of purpose. For this build, the owner envisioned a structure that would serve their property for decades to come. The garage and workshop are below, and a playroom is above. This makes an excellent space that is functional and relaxing when all the work is done for the day, while keeping little hands busy.

From Design to Drawings

The planning began with a vision: a timber frame structure with a clean, traditional silhouette. We worked with the owner to identify how the garage would serve them long-term, factoring in vehicle storage, tool access, and the usability of a lofted second level. Once the concept was in place, we moved into 3D modelling, engineering, and material selection.

A full set of construction drawings was prepared and reviewed before the first cut was made. This early design clarity allows our team to move smoothly into the next phase.

Joinery and Shop Preparation

The bulk of this project came together in the winter months, long before any boots hit the jobsite. Inside our shop, every timber was measured, cut, and dry-fit using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. This pre-planning stage is one of the most critical: it’s where the structure takes shape in full detail down to the last peg, ensuring that when the time comes to raise the frame, the process is smooth and precise. Traditional tools, careful layout, and hands-on craftsmanship define this phase of the build.

Raising Day and Enclosure

The raising is always a highlight of any timber frame project. With the foundation prepared and the sill plates installed, we began assembling the frame. Piece by piece, the walls and roof structure took shape, transforming from a carefully labelled stack of timbers to a fully standing frame.

Once the structure was raised, we enclosed it using 1×6 tongue-and-groove pine boards. We installed windows and doors with care, allowing natural light into the garage and the loft while keeping the weather out.

A Building That Reflects Our Process

From early conversations to raising day and final walkthrough, this project reflects our approach: clear communication, high-quality materials, and a deep respect for craft. This garage with a loft wasn’t just built to stand tall; it was built to last.
